How to Plan a Kashmir Trip: Step-by-Step Guide

Learn how to plan a Kashmir trip step by step, from choosing travel dates and destinations to arranging transport, accommodation, sightseeing and a practical itinerary.

How to Plan a Kashmir Trip: Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Decide the Best Time for Your Kashmir Trip

Start planning your Kashmir trip by deciding what you most want to experience, because the best travel period changes with your priorities. Spring suits gardens and blossoms, summer offers broader access to valleys and outdoor activities, autumn brings cooler weather and seasonal foliage, while winter is the main choice for snow and skiing.

Season Best For Main Planning Consideration
Spring Srinagar gardens, blossoms and mild sightseeing Higher mountain areas may still have snow
Summer Valleys, trekking and broader sightseeing Popular destinations can be busy
Autumn Cooler weather and changing foliage Temperatures fall later in the season
Winter Snow experiences and winter sports Mountain roads and activities become more weather-dependent

Do not choose dates based only on photographs from previous years. Snowfall, bloom periods and road openings vary, so seasonal expectations should remain flexible.

Step 2: Decide How Many Days You Need in Kashmir

Five to seven days is a practical range for most first-time Kashmir trips. Three days requires strong prioritisation, five days can cover the main highlights, and seven days allows a more comfortable route with fewer rushed road journeys.

3 Days

Keep the trip centred on Srinagar plus one or two major excursions. Trying to cover Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg properly in three calendar days usually creates too much driving.

5 Days

Five days can combine Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam, with Sonamarg considered when seasonal access and arrival or departure timing make it practical.

7 Days

Seven days gives you enough room for the four major destinations and allows overnight stays or an additional quieter excursion.

Count arrival and departure days realistically. A seven-day booking does not provide seven complete sightseeing days if substantial parts of Day 1 and Day 7 are spent travelling.

Step 3: Choose the Places You Want to Visit

For a first trip, prioritise Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam, then add Sonamarg if the season and number of days allow. Doodhpathri, Yusmarg and other quieter destinations are better treated as optional additions rather than replacements for the main circuit unless you deliberately want an offbeat trip.

Srinagar

Choose Srinagar for Dal Lake, shikara rides, houseboats, Mughal gardens, food, markets and cultural sightseeing.

Gulmarg

Choose Gulmarg for the Gondola, mountain scenery, skiing and seasonal snow activities.

Pahalgam

Choose Pahalgam for the Lidder River, valley scenery and outdoor experiences. As of September 2026, Chandanwari, Baisaran and Tulian Lake remain officially listed as closed through 31 December 2026, so current itineraries should not depend on them.

Sonamarg

Choose Sonamarg for alpine scenery, Thajiwas and excursions towards Baltal or the Zoji La side when roads and seasonal conditions permit.

Choose destinations because their experiences differ, not simply because their names appear on every Kashmir itinerary.

Step 4: Build a Practical Kashmir Itinerary

A practical Kashmir itinerary reduces repeated driving and gives each major destination enough time to be experienced properly. Avoid treating every place as a day trip from Srinagar if an overnight stay creates a smoother route.

Group Destinations Logically

Keep Srinagar sightseeing together, dedicate a separate day to Gulmarg, and allow sufficient time for Pahalgam. Sonamarg also deserves its own day when included.

Avoid Two Major Valleys in One Day

Combining Gulmarg and Pahalgam, or Pahalgam and Sonamarg, may look efficient on a map but generally replaces sightseeing time with road travel.

Leave Some Flexibility

Mountain weather and road conditions can affect activities. A small amount of flexibility is particularly useful for the Gulmarg Gondola, Sonamarg excursions and winter travel.

Build the itinerary around meaningful experiences, not the maximum possible number of stops.

Step 5: Decide How You Will Reach Kashmir

Choose between air, rail and road travel according to your starting point, available time and whether Kashmir is part of a wider Jammu itinerary.

By Flight

Flying to Srinagar is the most direct option for many first-time visitors and reduces the amount of holiday time spent reaching the Valley.

By Train

Rail connectivity to the Kashmir Valley has changed considerably with the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link corridor. Check the current service, stations and connections for your exact travel date before building a rail-based itinerary.

By Road

Road travel is relevant for visitors arriving from Jammu, Katra or neighbouring regions. Mountain highways can be affected by weather, maintenance and traffic restrictions.

Transport schedules and road status are time-sensitive information, so verify them close to travel rather than relying on an old itinerary.

Step 6: Plan Transportation Between Kashmir Destinations

For a first multi-destination Kashmir trip, arranging a vehicle for intercity travel is often the simplest option, but local sightseeing arrangements can differ after you reach each destination.

Clarify What Your Vehicle Covers

Before booking, confirm airport transfers, inter-destination journeys, sightseeing days, waiting time and any exclusions.

Local Transport May Be Separate

Do not assume a Srinagar vehicle can automatically operate on every inner sightseeing route in Gulmarg, Pahalgam or Sonamarg. Local transport restrictions or separate vehicle arrangements can apply and can change.

Plan for Mountain Delays

Allow extra time on road days. Traffic, rain, snowfall and local controls can make actual journey times longer than basic map estimates.

Step 7: Choose Where to Stay in Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg

Srinagar is the most practical main base, while nights in Gulmarg or Pahalgam can reduce repeated driving and make the trip more relaxed. Sonamarg can be visited as a day trip or overnight stay depending on your route and season.

Srinagar

Stay near Dal Lake if lake experiences are a priority, or choose a road-accessible central area if frequent day trips and straightforward vehicle access matter more.

Gulmarg

An overnight stay is particularly useful for skiing, snow activities or travellers who want greater flexibility around Gondola operations.

Pahalgam

Stay overnight if you want a slower valley experience rather than a long return journey to Srinagar after sightseeing.

Sonamarg

An overnight stay makes more sense for travellers planning additional mountain excursions or an onward route. For many standard first trips, a full-day visit is sufficient.

Check heating, hot water, road access and luggage arrangements when booking mountain accommodation, especially outside summer.

Step 8: Decide Whether to Include a Srinagar Houseboat Stay

A houseboat stay is worth including when you want the accommodation itself to be part of your Srinagar experience, but it does not need to replace a hotel for your entire stay.

Why Choose a Houseboat?

Houseboats offer a distinctive connection with Srinagar's lake environment and can be paired naturally with a shikara ride.

When a Hotel Is More Practical

A road-accessible hotel can be easier for heavy luggage, mobility requirements and early morning departures for mountain excursions.

Consider One Night

One houseboat night followed by a hotel stay can provide the experience without complicating every sightseeing departure.

Before booking, confirm the exact location, access method, heating, hot water, meal plan and luggage arrangements.

Step 9: Calculate Your Kashmir Trip Budget

Build your Kashmir budget from accommodation, transport, meals and activities rather than relying on a single generic per-person estimate. Costs vary too much by season, hotel category and travel style for one figure to be useful to every traveller.

Accommodation

Compare room category, location, meals, cancellation conditions and heating where relevant.

Transportation

Include airport or railway transfers, travel between destinations and any separate local sightseeing vehicles.

Activities

Allow separately for the Gulmarg Gondola, shikara rides, pony rides, skiing and other optional activities. Use current official or locally confirmed rates rather than old online price lists.

Food and Shopping

Keep discretionary shopping separate from essential trip costs, particularly if you intend to buy Pashmina, carpets or other high-value handicrafts.

Add a contingency amount for changes rather than budgeting to the exact minimum.

Step 10: Book Flights, Hotels, and Transportation

Once your dates and route are settled, book the major trip components in an order that protects the overall itinerary. Flights or long-distance transport normally determine the travel window, followed by accommodation and local transportation.

Book the Core Travel First

Secure the transport that gets you into and out of Kashmir before committing to a tightly structured hotel itinerary.

Match Hotels to the Route

Check the actual location of each property rather than choosing only by photographs or destination name. A remote scenic hotel may require extra local travel.

Confirm Transport Inclusions in Writing

For an arranged vehicle, make sure the agreed itinerary clearly identifies transfers, sightseeing days and exclusions.

During weather-sensitive seasons, pay particular attention to cancellation and modification terms.

Step 11: Plan and Book Key Kashmir Activities

Reserve or plan the activities that can affect the rest of your itinerary, while leaving simple local experiences flexible.

Gulmarg Gondola

Check current official booking information for the Gondola rather than using outdated fares or third-party screenshots. Phase 1 reaches Kongdoori, while Phase 2 continues into significantly higher terrain towards Apharwat.

Shikara Rides

Shikara rides generally do not require the same long-term planning as major transport. Agree on the route, duration and current fare before boarding.

Skiing and Adventure Activities

For skiing, rafting, trekking or similar activities, choose the experience according to skill level and current operating conditions. Backcountry or advanced mountain activities require additional safety planning.

Pony Rides

Confirm the route, duration, current price and destination status before starting. Never arrange a pony excursion towards an officially closed area.

Step 12: Plan Your Food, Shopping, and Local Experiences

Leave space in your itinerary for Kashmiri food, traditional bakeries, markets and handicrafts instead of treating every day as a sequence of sightseeing stops.

Foods to Try

Depending on your preferences, explore dishes such as Rogan Josh, Yakhni, Rista, Gushtaba, Haak and Nadru preparations. Wazwan provides a broader introduction to traditional Kashmiri Muslim banquet cuisine.

Try Local Tea and Bakery Foods

Kahwa and Noon Chai offer two very different Kashmiri tea experiences. Traditional kandur bakeries produce breads such as Girda, Lavasa and Tsochwor.

Shop Carefully

Pashmina, carpets, papier-mâché, walnut wood carving, embroidery, saffron and dry fruits are popular purchases. For expensive crafts, ask about material, production and available authenticity documentation.

Shopping near the end of the trip gives you time to compare products instead of making a high-value purchase at the first shop you enter.

Step 13: Check Weather, Road Conditions, and Seasonal Accessibility

Recheck Kashmir's weather, road conditions and destination access shortly before departure and again during the trip when travelling into the mountains. This is one of the most important planning steps because conditions can change after an itinerary has been booked.

Check Each Destination Separately

Srinagar weather does not necessarily represent conditions in Gulmarg, Sonamarg or higher mountain areas.

Watch for Official Closures

As of September 2026, the District Anantnag administration lists Chandanwari, Baisaran and Tulian Lake among destinations closed through 31 December 2026, along with Daksum, Sinthan Top, Margan Top and other locations.

Keep Sonamarg Flexible

Sonamarg and the higher routes towards Baltal and Zoji La are particularly dependent on seasonal road and mountain conditions.

An older itinerary showing a destination does not prove that the destination is currently accessible. Current official information should always take priority.

Step 14: Pack for Kashmir According to the Season

Pack for both your travel season and the highest-altitude destination on your itinerary. Conditions in Gulmarg or Sonamarg can be considerably colder than Srinagar.

Spring and Autumn

Use layers that can be added or removed through the day. A warm outer layer is useful for cooler mornings, evenings and mountain excursions.

Summer

Pack comfortable walking shoes, light daytime clothing, sun protection and an additional layer for cooler mountain areas.

Winter

Prioritise insulated clothing, warm socks, gloves, head covering and footwear appropriate for snow or icy surfaces.

For Outdoor Activities

Ordinary sightseeing clothing is not necessarily adequate for trekking, skiing or prolonged exposure to high-altitude winter conditions. Pack or hire activity-specific equipment where necessary.

Step 15: Complete Your Final Pre-Trip Checks

Before leaving, confirm the details that could disrupt the trip if discovered only after arrival. A short final check is more useful than adding another attraction to the itinerary.

Final Checklist

  • Reconfirm flights, trains or other long-distance transport.
  • Check current road and destination status.
  • Confirm hotel and houseboat reservations.
  • Verify airport or station pickup arrangements.
  • Review your inter-destination transport plan.
  • Check current Gondola information if visiting Gulmarg.
  • Review weather forecasts for each destination.
  • Carry appropriate identification and booking records.
  • Check baggage rules for your chosen transport.
  • Keep enough flexibility for weather-related changes.

Save important reservation and contact information so it remains accessible even when mobile connectivity is inconsistent.

Sample Kashmir Trip Plans for 3, 5, and 7 Days

A three-day Kashmir trip should be highly selective, five days works for the main highlights, and seven days gives first-time visitors the best balance between major destinations and road travel. The examples below count arrival and departure within the stated number of days.

Sample 3-Day Kashmir Trip

  1. Day 1: Arrive in Srinagar, explore Dal Lake and take a shikara ride if timing permits.
  2. Day 2: Full-day Gulmarg excursion with the Gondola as the main activity.
  3. Day 3: Srinagar sightseeing followed by departure according to your travel schedule.

With only three days, adding both Pahalgam and Sonamarg usually makes the trip too road-heavy.

Sample 5-Day Kashmir Trip

  1. Day 1: Arrive in Srinagar and experience Dal Lake.
  2. Day 2: Gulmarg and Gondola excursion.
  3. Day 3: Travel to Pahalgam and explore currently accessible local scenery.
  4. Day 4: Return towards Srinagar and complete city sightseeing.
  5. Day 5: Departure, with limited sightseeing depending on timing.

Sample 7-Day Kashmir Trip

  1. Day 1: Arrive in Srinagar and enjoy Dal Lake.
  2. Day 2: Srinagar gardens, heritage, food and shopping.
  3. Day 3: Gulmarg and Gondola.
  4. Day 4: Travel to Pahalgam and explore accessible local areas.
  5. Day 5: Additional Pahalgam sightseeing and return towards Srinagar.
  6. Day 6: Sonamarg when seasonally accessible, or another suitable open excursion.
  7. Day 7: Departure.

These are planning frameworks, not fixed routes. Current closures, road conditions, flight timing and the season should determine the final itinerary.
